Editing Grenadian Calypsonian Finley(Scholar) Jeffrey

(born 22 July 1969), better known as Scholar or King Scholar, is a Grenadian calypsonian, soca artist, and songwriter. Since his debut in 1993, he has been crowned Grenada Calypso Monarch seven times, in addition to winning titles as Soca Monarch and Groovy Soca Monarch.

Scholar has represented Grenada internationally, notably at the 2006 Carifesta Calypso Monarch Competition, where he placed fifth among competitors from across the region. Recognized as one of Grenada’s Cultural Ambassadors, he is best known for his politically and socially themed calypsoes, while also being a prolific composer and songwriter in both calypso and soca.

Early Life

Jeffrey was born in Chantimelle, St. Patrick, Grenada, to farmers Rita and Henezie Jeffrey. His father, a celebrated chantwell (lead singer) of Chantimelle’s Short Knee bands, influenced his early interest in music and performance.

Personal Life

He lives with his wife, Dianne, and their three children: Zaedel, Filandi, and Xaryel.
