Profiles of Football Clubs in Grenada
Grenada Football Association
[edit | edit source]The GFA is the national governing body for football (soccer) in Grenada. It’s responsible for organizing and overseeing football activities, including leagues, club competitions, national teams, development programs, youth football, refereeing, and more.
Achievements and Milestones (1934–1989)
[edit | edit source]Grenada’s national football team played its first international match on 13 October 1934, defeating British Guiana 2–1. In the pre-World War II period, the team recorded notable victories against British Guiana, Barbados, and St Kitts and Nevis.
A major milestone came in 1961, when Grenada won the Windward Islands Tournament, establishing themselves as a competitive force in regional football. This success marked the beginning of several strong performances in Caribbean competitions during the following decades.
Challenges and Competitive Struggles (1990–2010)
[edit | edit source]From the 1990s onward, Grenada experienced increasing challenges in regional and international tournaments. Although they qualified for the 1990 Caribbean Cup, defeats to Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica prevented further progression.
One of the most notable moments in Grenadian football history occurred during the 1994 Caribbean Cup qualifiers, in the infamous match against Barbados, which became widely known due to its unusual rules and outcome.
Gold Cup Experience
[edit | edit source]Grenada reached the Caribbean Cup final in 2008, earning qualification for the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Competing against stronger opposition, the team was unable to score and conceded ten goals during the tournament.
They later qualified for the 2010 Caribbean Cup, which secured them a place in the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup. However, Grenada faced difficulties in the group stage and did not advance further.[1]
