Grenada/Venezuela Relations and assistance
Appearance
Venezuela has been an important development partner and ally of Grenada, providing energy assistance, infrastructure funding, healthcare support, and social development programs. Cooperation is strengthened through regional initiatives such as PetroCaribe and ALBA-TCP.
Energy and Financial Assistance
- PetroCaribe Agreement: Provided oil at concessional terms, with a portion of payment deferred as long-term loans.[1]
- Social and trust funds from PetroCaribe financed development projects in health,education, and community infrastructure[2].
Infrastructure and Social Development
- Post-Hurricane Ivan (2004), Venezuela provided US$30 million for housing, hospitals, and youth programs.
- Between 2010–2013, additional grants (US$6.1M and US$11M) funded markets, pavilions, community centers, roads, and hospital improvements.
- Contributions include St. George’s Market Square, Tanteen Pavilion, La Calome Housing Project, Ford Bridge, and hospital expansions.[3]
Healthcare and Education
- Venezuela has supported Grenada’s General Hospital, including the eye ward and new hospital wings.
- During COVID-19, Venezuela provided PCR test kits, medical supplies, and pledged funds for vaccines.
- Scholarships and technical training in agriculture and other sectors were also provided.
Bilateral Agreements and Regional Cooperation
- Grenada and Venezuela have agreements on trade, economic complementarity, tourism,and cultural exchanges.
- Tariff removal and preferential trade measures support Grenadian exports to Venezuela.[3]
- Both countries are members of ALBA-TCP, promoting social and economic integration.
Significance
Venezuela’s assistance has strengthened Grenada’s energy security, infrastructure, healthcare, and social development. The partnership highlights the strategic and diplomatic role of bilateral cooperation within the Caribbean region.
